The Digital Nomad Trend

Take a moment to consider your work environment. Do you want to be here? Where would you rather be working from? For most of us, that question is answered with something along the lines of, “in the sun at the beach.”

More and more people are gravitating towards becoming digital nomads, and if you decide to go down that path, working from a beautiful remote location could be a reality.

What is a Digital Nomad?

Digital nomads are people who have found work online, allowing them to work from anywhere in the world. Typically, these jobs involve flexible schedules, as careers in the sector tend to focus more on project-based work or online business ownership.

This freedom allows you to live anywhere in the world, and even move from place to place. This is a very alluring proposition to many people.

Furthermore, jobs tend to have an increased amount of flexibility. Most careers involve either owning your own business or working within a creative, marketing or technical field.

What Jobs Are Available for Digital Nomads?

There are tons of available career options for digital nomads, but the most common tend to be:

  • E-commerce
  • Marketing
  • Consulting
  • Writing
  • Graphic Design
  • Programming

These are just a handful of jobs available within this field. If you already have a career, it would be worth looking for remote job opportunities that play to your current strengths.

What Sort of Challenges Do Nomads Face?

Everything isn’t perfect for the digital nomad. It comes with its own handful of challenges, even outside the ones commonly found with self-employment.

Common issues nomads must take into account are:

  • Times Zones – It can be difficult to coordinate work and meeting times when you are in different time zones for certain jobs.
  • Finding Clients – At first, it can be tough to find people to sell your services to you. This tends to get easier over time.
  • Tech – Most companies use a set of tools to get their work done, and every company is different. It can be a challenge to learn new systems all the time.
  • Location – More options sometimes leads to more problems, and making sure you have an area fit to work from can be a challenge.

There are other issues you must deal with that are more situation specific and depend on where you’re from, where you intend to go, and how long you intend to stay there. These are common problems for nomads as a whole and are not specific to digital ones.

Overall, the digital nomad life can provide you unparalleled freedom, but you would be unwise to not plan ahead to avoid some of the potential headaches that come with this type of work. The right planning can lead to a fulfilling career and life filled with independence and enjoyment.

As far as being able to do what you want, when you want, you can’t beat the digital nomad life.
